Municipality of Postojna

Located in SW Slovenia, the municipality of Postojna contains great diversity within its 270 km2 area. It includes 40 settlements and has a total population of approximately 17,000.

History

The town's name has not always been Postojna. It is first attested in the 13th century as Arnsberg (later Adelsberg).

Legends

For such a small municipality, Postojna boasts more legends and curiosities than you might imagine. For many local (and other) artists they represent an inspiration for many forms of artistic creativity.

"This is a new world. This is paradise!" shouted Luka Čeč on discovering the inner parts of Postojna Cave long ago in 1818. Since then we have been one of the wonders of the world.

Our region is home to many wonders for you to admire and enjoy. We are a centre of karstology (the study of karst phenomena), so you should certainly not miss the permanent "Karst Museum" exhibition at the Notranjska Museum in Postojna, where you can also see original treasure from Predjama Castle. Wander across wonderful Planinsko Polje or stroll through the Postojna's old town centre, where locals like to say that every house and every street conceals its own special story.  

WHAT TO DO

Discover legends and enjoy a range of activities above and below ground, in the water and in the air. Set off on foot or on a bike and explore the untouched forests and the nearby mountain peaks. Observe woodland creatures or (in summer) take a refreshing dip in the river Unica – where fly-fishing enthusiasts return year after year. Explore caves in a unique way as part of an underground cave trek or even by boat. For those who like being up in the clouds, we recommend a breathtaking panoramic flight over our region.  

WHERE TO EAT

We have a saying that "an empty bag cannot stand upright", so waste no time in choosing your favourite foodie treats from a selection that ranges from traditional Slovene cuisine to the best pizzas, fish dishes and various meat and vegetable specialities – something for everyone. There is always something happening here, especially in the summer months, when numerous localities around the Postojna region host traditional festivals and a variety of cultural, musical, sports and other events.
