Carnival takes place in Postojna every year on Shrove Tuesday. The traditional carnival procession boasts a tradition dating back almost 50 years.
These days the carnival procession in Postojna is both an expression of traditional culture and a tourist attraction and includes the satirical, comical and grotesque elements typical of carnivals.
The procession passes along the main streets of the centre of Postojna and features appearances by local cultural societies and visiting folklore groups.
The visiting groups incorporate the components of traditional carnival masks from bygone times and have a folklore character. The local groups, meanwhile, represent current topics or offer critical commentaries on local and broader social conditions. Some represent their own environment, locality or club/society.
The groups are also ranked in terms of their originality, comicality and wittiness, with prizes for the winners.
The carnival celebrations end in the evening with a
Costumed Carnival Ball at the
Hotel Center.
