Where two Karst
rivers, Pivka, which springs from Planina cave and Malenščica, calm,
slow-flowing river, confluence, river gets a new name, Unica. It’s path then
runs through Planinsko polje where it meanders and finally disappears
underground in so -called ponor, a special Karst feature.
Unica is well known not only in Slovenia but also beyond our country’s borders.
One of the most beautiful Karst rivers there is with beautiful surroundings and
a river bed full of life and natural food sources. Therefore, the fish are well
fed, big and powerful and when they are hooked, a fisherman is in for a very

Fishing Tips for river Unica:
The Best time for fishing is very early in the morning, when the fish are
feeding. You can be there even before the sunrise to prepare and start fishing
as soon as possible. Among the fish that you can catch using fly fishing
technique, there are Grayling and Brown trout, but some other fish species can
also take your bait, so keep your tackle strong.
If you are fast, you will be
able to check all good looking spots on the river since it's not very long. But
bear in mind that in the late afternoon it's best to settle in your favourite
spot and wait for the right opportunity when the fish start feeding again, so
you will be able to catch your trophy. Graylings are very hungry come evening,
so if you target this particular species, the time to catch it is right before
sunset. Fish in river Unica tend to be a little picky about the bait, but you
will not leave empty handed when using a good imitation of an olive bug.
