Planina Cave (formerly known as Malograjska jama or "Little Castle Cave") lies at the southern end of
Planinsko Polje, not far from the famous
Ravbar's Tower.
Features of the cave include a variety of chambers, numerous wonderful lakes and impressive dripstones. The cave is almost seven kilometres long and believed to be the largest water cave in Slovenia.
Another notable characteristic is that it contains
one of the largest confluences of underground rivers in Europe, where the Rak, flowing from
Rakov Škocjan, and the Pivka, flowing from Postojna Cave, join together to form the Unica.
Planina Cave boasts remarkable biodiversity and is home to 60 aquatic species and 40 land species. The most famous of them is the endemic cave-dwelling aquatic salamander known as the olm or "human fish" (Proteus anguinus), of which you can see "a little sea" in Planina Cave.
Visits to Planina Cave take place with the help of halogen lamps. Choose between the classic one-hour visit or a visit with boats, which lasts 4–5 hours and is only possible when the water level is low.
